Hobbies to Mention in a Marriage Biodata
Marriage Biodata Maker Team · · 2 min read
The hobbies section is short, but it's often the only place in a biodata where your personality comes through — the rest of the document is facts and figures. A good list gives the reader something to picture and, later, something to talk about.
Keep the list short and specific
Three to five hobbies is the right range. A long list of ten interests reads as an attempt to appear well-rounded rather than an honest account of how you spend your time, and it makes each individual interest feel less genuine.
Compare:
Travelling, music, movies, sports, reading, cooking, dancing, photography
against:
Trekking on weekends, cooking regional recipes, photography
The second tells the reader more in fewer words, because each item is specific enough to picture.
Hobbies by category
A mix across a couple of categories reads better than everything from one bucket.
Physical / outdoor — trekking, cycling, badminton, yoga, running, swimming
Creative — painting, sketching, photography, writing, playing an instrument
Home and food — cooking, baking, gardening
Quiet / indoor — reading, chess, puzzles, journaling
Social — volunteering, travelling with friends, hosting get-togethers
Picking one or two from different categories (say, one physical and one creative) paints a fuller picture than five variations on the same theme.
Be specific rather than broad
"Reading" says little on its own. "Reading historical fiction" or "reading about personal finance" says a lot more, and it's the kind of detail that gives a family something concrete to ask about later. The same goes for travel: "travelling" is generic; "backpacking through the hills every winter" is memorable.
Phrases to avoid
- "Listening to music" and "watching movies" — true for nearly everyone, so they add little
- A hobby you don't actually do, just because it sounds impressive — it tends to come up in conversation eventually
- Overly formal phrasing like "an avid reader of contemporary literature" — plain language reads more naturally here than anywhere else in the biodata
Where it fits in your biodata
The hobbies field usually sits with your personal details, close to any "about me" note — see what to write in a marriage biodata for how the rest of that section comes together. Once you know what to list, our biodata builder has a dedicated hobbies field ready to fill in.
